SENIOR DESIGN POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE PAD
Globally, postpartum bleeding accounts for 1 out of every 4 maternal deaths and within the United States, postpartum bleeding is the leading cause of maternal mortality. Secondary postpartum hemorrhaging (SPPH), defined as excessive vaginal blood loss, occurs between 24 hours and six weeks after birth and is the most common cause of hospital return for women post-delivery. SPPH occurs in 1% of women who deliver vaginally, a statistic that hasn’t decreased significantly in 40 years. Despite all this, the tools given to women after giving birth are remarkably rudimentary. Currently, women are told to get medical attention if they fill more than one pad in an hour, however the type and size of pad are not described. In order to address this, a product that would quantify blood volume loss is needed.
Verification & Validation Testing

Product Video
I developed the above product video via Adobe Premiere Pro.

I developed and executed the protocol used for Liquid Strikethrough Verification Testing. The purpose of the liquid strike-through test is to measure the time of liquid strike-through for the postpartum hemorrhage pad. Specifically, liquid strike-through testing is used to ensure that when using the pad, blood will be absorbed across the top polypropylene/polyethylene layer and into the absorbent plant fiber core. Pads are expected to quickly absorb simulated blood with minimal liquid pooling to ensure that fluid is not transported back to the patient.
